The Rededicationing

As I’m sure you’ve all noticed, TDYLF has been abandoned for some time. This is the first post since late August. It’s been a long, strange year. Lots of things- some good, some horrible, some that were just kind of things neither good or horrible- have prevented me from doing much with this site. But I miss it. This site afforded me a chance to work on both my writing and my design skills, all under the guise of watching lots of movies and television. Then I had less time for movies and TV, which meant I had less time to write about movies and TV. And that also meant that there were less ideas coming in, and therefore less ideas being converted into written word. As of today, I’d officially like that to change. I’m not making any promises, but I’d like to rededicate myself to this site, even if it’s just an article or two each week. It was too much fun to let it die on the vine.

So which movies and TV shows have I been dumping into my brain recently? That seems like as good a place as any to fire the ol’ Droid back up.

Other TV Shows That Could Take Place in Minnesota

MinnesotaHeader

Fargo made its debut on FX this week. It was a gripping premiere, full of plenty of the shenanigans we’ve come to love from the Coen catalogue. Having lived in Duluth, Minnesota briefly, I got a kick out of hearing locations like Bemidji and Duluth referred to regularly. Then on Twitter, I saw this banter between IndieWire editor Sam Adams and Daniel Fienberg of HitFix:

Naturally, this led me to wonder what other Minnesota-themed TV shows might be created. Continue reading

Tales from the Synapses

The other day, I realized that I hadn’t posted anything in a few weeks. Rather than letting TDYLF remain dormant, now seemed like as good a time as any to bang out a quick article. Of course, I don’t have any specific focus. However, I do have a lot of random thoughts to dump out of my head. Let’s do this Larry King-style, with a bunch of meandering garbage that’s crept in and out of my skull in the last few weeks. Continue reading

The Academia Nut Series: Kelli Marshall

AcademiaNut

Academia Nut is a new series at tdylf in which I conduct interviews (via the exciting world of email!) with various academics and accomplished writers about film, TV, and pop culture. It’s a chance to learn about movies and TV from some of the best minds in the industry. The introductory interview is with Kelli Marshall. Kelli holds a Ph.D. in the humanities (film studies and Shakespeare) from the University of Texas–Dallas. She has taught at her alma mater as well as the University of North Texas, Texas Christian University, and the University of Toledo. She currently teaches classes on Seinfeld, film and television comedy, and the works of Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino at DePaul University and Columbia College Chicago. Kelli’s research fields include Shakespeare in popular culture and film musicals with a special nod to Gene Kelly. She is also a staunch advocate for social media in and outside the classroom. You can find her work at MediAcademia or follow her on Twitter at @kellimarshall. Continue reading

Colorizing Breaking Bad: The Addendum

BB_Addendum

My Breaking Bad color charts have gotten a lot of attention since the show came back. It’s been overwhelming. And while the reaction has been mostly positive (thanks, internet!), I feel like I need to add a few notes to clarify the original article. Continue reading

It’s Ålways Bergman in Philådelphia

Bergman_IASIP

It’s Always Sunny in Philadalphia will be coming back this September, now airing on FXX. They’ve released a series of teasers that pay homage to Ingmar Bergman, thereby creating one of the oddest, most amazing pairings imaginable. Each teaser is riddled with Bergman clichés, and they’re all in Swedish. They’re hilarious, and sure to please the somewhat limited market of people who are simultaneously Bergman and IASIP enthusiasts. As it turns out, I am definitely their target market and I want to high-five the whole cast for creating these ads. Here are the teasers. Continue reading

Remember the (Awesome TV Day That Is) The Sabbath and Keep It Holy

SabbathHeader

Today, I’m going to give you all a little snapshot into my neuroses. It’s almost as neurotic as my theater ritual. You see, I punt away an entire day of my week, every week, no matter what month or year it is. I remember Sunday, and I keep it holy… because of television. Continue reading
