The Great Big TV Scoreboard

I talk about TV shows a lot with my friend Marty. If he says I should check out a TV show, I check it out, and vice versa. Somewhere along the line through the years, we started ranking the shows that we both watched. It provided us with an easy gauge for how we felt about certain shows. Marty has other responsibilities now- his infant daughter, for instance- and those conversations almost never happen far less frequently. But I never really stopped ranking TV shows in my head. Call it the great, big TV scoreboard. Just for grins, this is how I rank all of my favorite cable TV dramas. Understand that a lot of this stuff changes almost weekly. Continue reading

The TV Confessional

Bless me, father, for I have sinned. My last confession was… well, never. I’ve never confessed TV sins, or any sins of any kind.  And actually, I have no clue how to give a real confession because I’m not Catholic. But I do have some TV confessions to make. Have mercy on my soul. Just don’t expect me to repent. Continue reading

Return Dates for 2012 Cable TV Dramas

The next few weeks will be big if you’re a fan of cable and premium cable drama. Two of the heavyweights of cable TV drama will start their next seasons on the heels of the season 2 finale of The Walking Dead. It can be maddening if you’re a fan of these shows, waiting for the networks to wrap up production and air the next season. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve done a google search for this information the last few years, I’d… well, I’d probably have $50. But you get the idea. To help, I’ve compiled some updates (as of March 19) for the return of your favorite cable TV dramas. Continue reading

Supernatural Creatures That Should Appear on True Blood

I have a shameful admission to make. I watch True Blood. To quote a friend, “It’s a show about vampires and werewolves having sex”. And therein lies the shame- the ridiculousness of it all. I always feel so dirty the day after I’ve watched that show. However, I’ve reached a détente with my guilt. I’ve learned to watch the show as if I was watching an Ed Wood-quality B movie. My enjoyment of it goes up considerably with this approach. One of my initial issues with the show was the never-ending stream of supernatural creatures that showed up. I was suspending disbelief with vampires. Then came shapeshifters and faeries. And then came a maenad. And then there were werewolves and witches. Finally, they added the most notorious of legendary creatures, the werepanther. No, I did not just make up the word “werepanther”, although my spellcheck doesn’t believe me. At any rate, since the gates are open and any and all supernatural creatures are making appearances now, here are some that I think would make great characters on True Blood.

Mummies
If you’re going to rifle through the Universal Horror classics with vampires and werewolves, why stop there? There are plenty of ornate, fascinating tombs in Louisiana, certainly more than enough to house an ancient Egyptian corpse seeking revenge. Continue reading

17 TV Characters Who Probably Have Venereal Diseases

We’ve all seen these characters- the clichéd character whose monstrous sexual desires can’t be quenched. But where are the consequences? Let’s face reality. Many of our favorite TV characters probably had sexually transmitted diseases. Here are seventeen TV characters who most likely have felt the burn and/or had to use a very special shampoo:

1. Larry Dalliapoulos, Three’s Company
He was the scourge of the Regal Beagle. And his clearly defined womanizing role was key to the show’s plot. How many times did he rope Jack into the highjinx, only  to have Jack find himself in the odd position of denying his heterosexuality to Mr. and Mrs. Roper, or Mr. Furley? Continue reading

The Wire-ning of Premium Cable Programming

A few months ago, 2004 called me and insisted that I finally watch The Wire. After all, I’ve watched just about every other major premium cable show. And few received the critical acclaim that The Wire did. So I gobbled it up. I just completed it last night. There were many, many things I enjoyed about the show- too many to get into here. One aspect I enjoyed was seeing one actor after another that I was familiar with from other premium cable shows, popping up on The Wire. So many of the supporting characters on the show were so good at what they did that other shows around cable had taken notice. Here’s a list of where else you find these actors:

Michael K. Williams
Williams played Omar Little on The Wire, one of the show’s most popular and recognizable characters. He nailed the role, playing the terrifying Robin Hood of Baltimore’s projects. It was with little surprise that HBO turned to him again when they had a meaty role in Boardwalk Empire for a character named Chalky White. Sure enough, one season is in the books of Boardwalk Empire and Williams is again playing a very memorable character. Indeed. Continue reading

Sesame Street Goes Hollywood, or Alistair Cookie Has Great Taste in Pop Culture

The other day, I found a Sesame Street spoof of Mad Men, and it made my day. Fascinated by the concept, I kept digging and digging and unearthed several more Sesame Street spoofs, many of which came via Alistair Cookie, host of Monsterpiece Theater. Pardon my lack of originality here- none of this is my content, nor am I going to say anything special about any of it. I guess I’m just shocked that Sesame Street has spoofed all of these Hollywood movies and TV shows and felt the need to share.

Mad Men
Best line: “Good work, sycophants”. I can’t wait to hear my 3 year old nephew drop “sycophants” on me.
