The Soundtrack Series: The Coen Brothers

CoenSoundtrack

I have a confession to make. Last week, when I started The Soundtrack Series, I kicked things off with Stanley Kubrick. The truth is that the Coens were actually the inspiration for the series. They would’ve been the first in the series but I’m smart enough to realize that TDYLF is often oversaturated with the Coens. But I’ve waited a whole week now, and even without the Coenification of this site, they’d be a worthy choice. Without further ado, here’s entry number two in the Soundtrack Series- the Coen brothers. Where have you gone, Punxsutawney Phil? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo woo woo. Or if you’re like me, you turn your eyes to Sun Prairie, Wisconsin’s Jimmy the Groundhog, who’s twice the groundhog than that punkass Phil could ever be. And we all turn our eyes towards some groundhog because Groundhog Day is upon us. In honor of these titans of weather prediction, here are my seven favorite cinematic rodents. Continue reading

It’s Not Easy Being Green: Great Frogs of Hollywood

It hasn’t been uncommon for groups to avoid getting their due in Hollywood. For the most part, women were relegated to second class citizens in early Hollywood. Of course, they had pivotal roles but it was only through the male protagonists that most of them had any role at all. Eventually, this wrong was righted and more and more weighty roles went to actresses. A similar arc happened with African-Americans in cinema. But there’s one group that has never gotten the proper due from Hollywood- frogs. Today, I’m here to help the healing begin. Here are some great frogs of Hollywood. Continue reading
