Infographic: The X-Men Series: Box Office Dollars vs. Critical Reception

At this point, the X-Men franchise has produced seven movies. That’s more than Star Wars, Rocky, Madea, Die Hard, and Ernest (the guy who was scared stupid). It’s time to start taking a look at some of the data for the series. Which films are critical darlings? Which films are pulling in cash? And which films do both? I’ve created this scatterplot of the X-Men films, featuring their Rotten Tomatoes scores and box office dollars, to lay it all out.

    Hi, Droid:

The “X-Men’ has a larger pallet of characters to focus stories on and spin off from. It also seems that the writers, directors and others involved hold the source material in some reverence and do their best to get as much as they can right.

So far, they haven’t hit the point of diminishing returns. And unless they screw up big. Or P.O. or ignore (“Wolverine: Origins’) their audience. The franchise will continue to prosper.

  2. Well, I’m glad X-Men Origins is at the bottom. That film was terrible. I still haven’t gotten around to seeing Days of Future past yet. I’m not exactly crazy about the new cast.

  3. Its a bit of a shame that the better movies don’t make as much as the lesser quality ones aside from X2. And of course Future Past can still inch its way up a bit higher since its still in theaters.

    • First Class is the real straggler for dollars. I was kind of surprised it didn’t do better.

I guess it’s worth noting (since I didn’t in the article or on the viz) that all dollars are inflation-adjusted.

I’m thinking Future Past will end up in the top 3 (dollar-wise) before it’s all done.

  4. Nice work here. I had no idea The Last Stand made that much money. Wow.

  5. I have seen the wolverine, hope this one is ahead of it.

  6. Days of Future Past would have to be my favorite, for the meaningful dialogue and how the characters interacted with each other. Hope to see some more Maximoff (Quicksilver) soon. I hope to start writing more entertainment posts in my blog as well. Thanks for post!
