There is a phenomenal depth to the number of film genres that exist. Fortunately, most of them can be condensed into ten unique genres. has broken it down: action/adventure, comedy, crime and gangster, drama, epic/historical, horror, musical/dance, science fiction, war, and western. Once you start drilling a little deeper, you discover an huge amount of sub-genres. Imagine any kind of film, and there is no doubt a sub-genre for it. I’ve taken filmsite’s Film Sub-Genres Types (and Hybrids) page and turned it into an infographic, which I think will really illustrate the diversity of cinema that has been and will continue to be available. As you might expect, there are a great deal of sub-genres which overlap across multiple main genres. They’re listed at the bottom.

I’d love it if you did a follow-up to this in which you picked the best and worst sub-genre of each. Totally subjective (and time consuming), sure, but it would still be fun.

    • That would be time-consuming, rewarding… and honestly, I don’t think I’d be qualified just because there are so many of these that I’m unfamiliar with. But I love the idea.
