Great Moments in Movie History: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done a “Great Moments in Movie History”, mostly because I’ve lost my use of Adobe Illustrator. That said, I still have Photoshop. And because of that, I can give you the return of the slightly different “Great Moments in Movie History”. Today, we’ll take a look at a personal favorite, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Specifically, I’ve used stick figures to replicate the scene where a “polar bear” (a.k.a. a guy in the worst polar bear costume ever made) chases the two kids into an ice cave on the North Pole. Enjoy! Be sure to click on it to get the full-res version.

And if you don’t know what scene I’m referring to (or more likely, what film I’m referring to), here’s the clip of the original. Jump to the 3:20 mark for the yummy polar bear assault goodness:

  1. This film is amazing. I even bought it for my dad for Christmas (when else!). It’s truly terrible. In a good way 🙂

  2. I watched this movie last Christmas (actually it was the MST3K version), knowing nothing about it, thinking it was gonna be more of an action movie. Boy was I disappointed.

  3. I know nothing of this film!!

Although the polar bear sounds blooming awesome!

    • It’s a Christmas tradition that I torture members of my family with each December. I love it.

There’s also a 1950’s Mexican Santa Claus movie- which I think is just called “Santa Claus”- that features Santa fighting the Devil, and his reindeer are made out of styrofoam. It’s somehow even worse than “Santa Conquers the Martians”.

  4. I watched this movie last weekend, so this post made my day. We had a B-movie fest featuring this movie and Killer Clowns from Outer Space.

  5. Up next, The Tooth Fairy Conquers the Aliens! Seriously, though this looks like an awful, awful movie. Troll 2 awful, I’d even say. So naturally, I want to see it.

Great to see a return for the Great Moments series. I don’t see that much of a difference between this and the Illustrator ones, so you’d be fine using Photoshop in the future. Can’t wait for the next one!

    • Oooh… comparing this to Troll 2 seems kinda tough. I hadn’t thought of it in that way. I’m more inclined to say that this is better than Troll 2 because Troll 2 seemed to genuinely try very hard to be a decent/reasonable movie, whereas Santa Claus Conquers the Martians was definitely aimed at little kids. Basically, SC v. the Martians has an excuse for being so bad, and it didn’t miss the target by nearly as much as Troll 2 did.
