7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Robert Osborne

Today is TCM’s 17th birthday. And as a huge fan of TCM, I feel like celebrating. With all due respect to the amazing programming on TCM, it simply wouldn’t be the same without congenial host, Robert Osborne. He’s like every movie nerd’s grandfather. Here are seven things you probably didn’t know about Robert Osborne:

1. Lucille Ball was a great friend and mentor.

2. He appeared in the Beverly Hillbillies pilot

3. According to The New York Times, he writes and records 150 movie lead-ins a month for TCM.

4. He was discovered by a Hollywood talent scout while playing the role of a whistling psychopath in the play Night Must Fall

5. He was once Bette Davis’ date to the Academy Awards. (Source for #4 and 5)

6. Counts Howard Hawks as his favorite director.

7. Is known as the official biographer of “Oscar”

  1. I was given the opportunity to work with Osbourne for a day while recording his TCM lead-ins/outs in Atlanta. He lives in New York but comes to Atlanta once a month to record all the leads for that month. He’ll do… pfft… twenty or thirty a day for five days. It gets really trying on his voice, actually.

He was really nice, though, and just exudes a love of film. I will say that giving him credit for writing all of them ignores the three producers that sat in the room constantly editing and looking things up on IMDB and so on. He definitely gives opinions when reading through on things he remembers or wants to change, but it’s a group effort. Still, Osbourne is definitely awesome in every regard!

    • Excellent call on including the three producers. I’d hate to ignore those people and Osborne seems like the extremely gracious guy who wouldn’t be comfortable with their exclusion.

Interesting fella. Suppose he nailed Bette Davis? That would NOT have sucked in her younger years, IMHO.

    • You know, I’ve heard rumors about Nancy Davis… as in, Nancy Davis Reagan… and members of the Rat Pack. No clue at all if there’s any truth to them- obviously- but it’s funny for me to think about.

Thanks for the trivia John. WOW, he was Bette Davis’ date to the Oscar? Now that’s something a guy can boast about 🙂
